Barisal gears up to welcome Bangla New Year

Preparations for Chaitra Sangkranti and Pahela Baishakh are going on full swing in Barisal city, with various colourful programmes and enthusiasm – to bid farewell to the outgoing Bangla Year 1423 (on April 13) and welcoming the New Year 1424 (April 14).

Volunteers of Charukala Barisal are working round the clock to organise the traditional Mongol Shobhajatra from Barisal City College compound at 8am on April 14, along with a “Rakhi Bandhan” (friendship ties) ceremony.

Udichi's Barisal unit is also preparing to bring out a Mongol Shobhajatra from Brojo Mohun Bidyaloy (BM School) ground at 8am.

A separate Mongol Shobhajatra will also be organised by district administration on Pahela Baishakh from Barisal Circuit House and from different educational institutions at different times, said Dr. Gazi Md. Saifuzzaman, deputy commissioner of Barisal.

All the Mongol Shobhajatra rallies would end at their starting points after moving on city roads, carrying motifs of Bangla folk and daily life.

Charukala Barisal will also arrange a two-day long Lokojo Sangskritik Prodorshoni (folk cultural fair) and juvenile painting competition at Barisal City College ground, focusing on regional life, folk and heritage. Preparation and sale of handicraft items and performance of folk songs and plays like Jari, Sari, Royani, Hoyla and a painting exhibition will feature in the event.

A three-day Baishakh Utshab along with Baishakhi fair and cultural programmes will also be arranged by Udichi at BM School ground.

Shabdaboli Group Theatre at Barisal central Shahid Minar, Planet World Children Park and local businessmen at Hatkhola will arrange Chaitra Sangkranti (last day of the year) Utshab, Baishakhi Mela and cultural programme in the city from April 12-15.

Kheyali Group Theatre will hold a cultural gathering and programme at their office premises to bid farewell and welcome Bangla year from April 13 evening to the early hours of April 14.

Udichi Shilpi Goshthi and Sur Lahori Sangeet Bidyalay, Parantik Sangeet Bidyalay, Anirban Shilpi Gosthi have arranged cultural programmes on the morning of Pahela Baishakh, at BM School at Ashwini Kumar Hall premises respectively.

Gano Shilpi Sangstha will perform cultural shows of folk songs and plays in front of Barisal Ashwani Kumar Hall on Pahela Baishakh afternoon.

Local administration and law enforcing agencies have taken special measures for safety and security of the people. Undisrupted power supply has been ensured at programmes and fair grounds of Pahela Boishakh and related programmes; mobile patrol teams have been deployed and check-posts set up at sensitive and key points, said SM Ruhul Amin, metropolitan police commissioner of Barisal.
