“I am an avid Bangladeshi at heart” – Enamul Haque

Enamul Haque has been a part of the entertainment industry for over five decades, working in television, films, theatre, script writing as well as radio. In 2012, Haque, who is also a retired professor at the Department of Chemistry at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, earned the esteemed Ekushey Padak for his illustrious career. However, such accomplishments have not slowed him down, as he continues to be a busy actor and a regular favourite on the screen. We caught up with the artiste on his 77th birthday.

Wishing you a very happy birthday. How do you feel on this special day?

Thank you so much. It feels wonderful to receive best wishes from my friends, family and fans on my birthday. I am grateful to them for their immense love and support.

Do you have any special plans for today?

I do not have any plans of my own. But I am sure members of my theatre troupe, Nagorik Natyangon, along with my daughter, Hridi, will plan a surprise for me.

Tell us about some of your fondest birthday memories.

On my 50th birthday, members of Nagorik Natyangon arranged a festival in my honour. It was quite a memorable day.

What would you like to wish for on your birthday?

I am an avid Bangladeshi at heart. I am very proud of Bangladesh’s accomplishments, but I believe that we still have a long way to go. My wish on this day is for everyone to keep working for the betterment of the country.

What are your comments on the current state of the television industry?

I am afraid that TV channels these days have become more about money-making and less about quality projects and creativity. I do not think people are really focusing on the artistic expertise.
