Ramendu Majumdar turns 80 today

Today marks the 80th birthday of renowned thespian and Ekushey Padak Awardee, Ramendu Majumdar.  He is one of the founders of the troupe, Theatre, formed in 1972. He has been the President of International Theatre Institute (ITI) twice. Currently, he is the Honorary President of ITI. Unfortunately, the artiste tested positive for COVID-19 last month, and is presently, staying at home.

What are your plans for the day?

Usually on birthdays, I plan family outings with my wife, my daughter, my son-in-law and my grandchild. However, given the circumstances, we are not going out this year.

You are one of the most successful cultural personalities in Bangladesh. What would you say are your greatest achievements so far?

I have done everything out of my unconditional love for our country. One of my greatest achievements is representing Bangladesh internationally as the President of ITI. For the last 48 years, we have been publishing the newspaper, Theatre, which I think will play a great role in archiving the history of the field.

Do you have any more goals to fulfil?

I wish to establish theatre schools more stably. I also have thousands of books in my personal library. I want to archive them and open the library to the public someday.

What were your major concerns behind establishing the group, Theatre?

Our aim is to tell stories of the happiness and struggles of ordinary people. Although we were founded in 1972, it took us two years to come up with regular productions. Our first stage show was Martyr Munir Chowdhury's Kobor. We have been actively working since then.

What are your thoughts on the success of theatre troupes of Bangladesh so far?

I think in the last four decades or so, theatre troupes in Bangladesh have been widely successful, owing to their hard work and collaborative efforts. They have garnered international acclaim. As theatre artistes, we take pride in upholding the culture of our country, and we respect our work immensely.

Are you planning to come up with any new productions?

I was directing a theatrical project before the pandemic brought everything to an abrupt halt. We plan to return to the stage, once things get back on track.
