'Laal shalu' staged at Ganga-Jamuna Utshab 2018

As soon as the curtains were raised, the sight of statue-like figures which crowded the entire stage, grabbed the attention of the audience. The beginning of the play Laalshalu was dynamic indeed. The play is about a man named Majeed, who leaves his village -- where there is a famine caused by overpopulation.

The opening scene, therefore, aptly symbolised the theme of the play staged by the theatre troupe Prachya, who came from Kolkata to enact the play based on Syed Waliullah's novel Laalshalu at the Ganga-Jamuna Sangskritik Utshab 2018. It was staged at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Directed by Abanti Chakraborty, the play intends to take a stand against extremism through the character of Majeed, who turns a stranger's grave into a mazar (shrine). People come to the mazar and leave coins, which eventually goes to Majeed's pockets. Majeed plays with peoples' emotions in the name of religion.

Near the end of the play, Majeed is struck by the karma of his own actions. Overall, the production is well done, and struck a chord with the audience who left the hall with nothing but utmost praise.
