DMCH Spending: Tk 20cr for food, transport abnormal

PM says in JS; probe launched

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the government was investigating the expenditure of Tk 20 crore for accommodation, food, and transportation of Dhaka Medical College Hospital health workers who are directly involved in treating Covid-19 patients.

Speaking in parliament during the discussion on the finance bill, she said the government has taken measures to ensure the services for doctors, nurses, and other health workers for free.

"The cost of Tk 20 crore in a medical college for accommodation and food seems to be a bit abnormal. Therefore, we are investigating the matter. We will take measures if any irregularities are found in this regard," the PM said.

Earlier, Deputy Leader of the Opposition GM Quader raised the issue in the House while taking part in the budget discussion.

He said Tk 20 crore was spent for food and hotel stay of DMCH doctors and health workers which was doubtful.

Contacted, DMCH Director Brig Gen AKM Nasir Uddin yesterday said Tk 20 crore was sought for DMCH health workers and another Tk 1 crore for those of Railway General Hospital.

"I am keeping 1,970 health workers in hotels. Of them, 600 are doctors and 850 nurses. The rest are ward staffers and Ansar officials," said the director.

He said hotel room rents vary from Tk 350 to Tk 5,500 per night. Rooms in 30 hotels have been rented, he added.

The health workers have been staying in hotels since May 2.

"We are paying a contractor Tk 500 per day for food of each health worker," said Nasir Uddin. "We are also paying for transportation of health workers from hotels to hospitals."
