‘Drug dealer’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with BGB

A suspected drug trader was killed in a “gunfight” with the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early yesterday.

The identity of the deceased could not be known yet.

Based on the information that a group of smugglers were entering Bangladesh from Myanmar with a big consignment of yaba, a BGB team conducted a drive in Hnila area on the bank of Naf River, said Lt Col Faisal Hasan Khan, BGB commanding officer of Teknaf.

Sensing presence of law enforcers, the “drug traders” opened fire on the BGB team forcing them to retaliate, triggering a “gunfight”, claimed the BGB official.

Later, police recovered a bullet-hit body from the spot, said Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station.

The body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for an autopsy. A case was filed with Teknaf Police Station in this connection.

A total of 50,000 yaba pills and a locally made firearms were also recovered from the scene, the BGB official said.

ANOTHER SUSTAIN BULLET INJURY

A man sustained bullet injuries in what police said was a gunfight in port city’s Bayezid area early yesterday.

Md Jasim, 40, was accused in a case filed over attacking a mobile court during an eviction drive in the same area on May 13, said Ataur Rahman Khandokar, officer-in-charge of Bayezid Bostami Police Station.

He is currently receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, the OC added.
