Five people were arrested yesterday on charge of raping a girl in Galachipa upazila town of Patuakhali.
The arrestees were then produced before the Galachipa Upazila Judicial Magistrate's Court that sent them to jail.
The 19-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in the upazila town on Wednesday night.
She was sent to Patuakhali General Hospital for medical tests, said Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Galachipa Police Station, adding that a case was also filed with the station.
Quoting the case statement, Humayun Kabir, OC (investigation) of the police station, said the girl went to a doctor in the upazila town on Wednesday afternoon. In the evening, she went to Galachipa ferry ghat to go to her sister's house in Sonakhali village which is on the opposite side of the river.
There, she met a man named Shahidul who told her not to go to her sister's house at night and asked her to stay at a hotel. They then went to a hotel. Shahidul left the hotel, keeping the girl there, the OC said.
But around 8:30pm, Shahidul, along with four associates Swapan, Jiten, Khokon, and Rashid Gazi, returned to the hotel. Then hotel manager Faruq asked the girl to open the door of her room. When she opened the door, the six entered the room and raped her, the police officer added.
On information, police rescued the girl around 3:30am and held the five. But hotel manager Faruq managed to flee.
Legal action will be taken against the accused after investigation, the OC said.
