Female Candidates: AL picks 20, BNP 10

The ruling Awami League is well ahead of its archrival BNP in terms of picking women candidates for the December 30 national election.

Out the 300 parliamentary seats, the AL has so far fielded women candidates in 20 while the BNP in 10.

Apart from the two major parties, the Jatiya Party has nominated two women and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Inu) one.

The ruling AL has nominated all its female candidates who had contested the 2014 national election.

In Moulvibazar-3, the AL has nominated Nesar Ahmed instead of incumbent lawmaker Syeda Saira Mohsin who was elected an MP in a by-election after the demise of her husband Syed Mohsin Ali, also a former social welfare minister.

The AL's women candidates are Sheikh Hasina from Gopalgonj-3, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury from Rangpur-6, Mahabub Ara Begum Gini from Gaibandha-2, Ismat Ara Sadique from Jessore-6, Habibun Nahar from Bagerhat-3, Begum Monnuzan Sufian from Khulna-3, Jebunnesa Afroz from Barisal-5, Begum Matia Chowdhury from Sherpur-2, Rebecca Momin from Netrokona-4, Momotaz Begom from Manikganj-2, Sagufta Yasmin from Munshiganj-2, Sahara Khatun from Dhaka-18, Simeen Hussain Rimi from Gazipur-4, Meher Afroze Chumki from Gazipur-5, Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury from Faridpur-2, Joya Sengupta from Sunamganj-2, Dipu Moni from Chandpur-3, Ayesha Ferdaus from Noakhali-6, Selima Ahmed from Comilla-2 and Shahina Akhtar Chowdhury from Cox's Bazar-4.

The female nominees of the BNP are Rita Rahman from Rangpur-3, Kamrunnahar from Natore-1, Sabina Yasmin Chobi from Natore-2, Rumana Morshed Konok Chapa from Sirajganj-1, Jeba Amin Khan from Jhalakathi-2, Sansila Jebrin from Sherpur-1, Tahmina Kaman from Netrakona-4, Shamim Ara Begum from Dhaka-11, Shama Obaed from Faridpur-2 and Hasina Ahmed from Cox's Bazar-1.

In Faridpur-2, there will be battle of ballots between two females -- Sajeda Chowdhury of AL and Shama Obaed of BNP.     

Jatiya Party has nominated Raushan Ershad for Mymensingh-4 and 6 and Nasrin Jahan Ratna for Barishal-6.

JSD candidate Shirin Akhtar will contest the polls from Feni-1.
