2 BNP candidates lodge complaints with CEC over law and orders situation

BNP’s two contenders have lodged two written complaints with the Election Commission over deteriorating law and orders situation and role of police in their respective electoral areas ahead of the December 30 general elections.

BNP contestants from Bhola-3 constituency Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and Mahbub Uddin Khokon from Noakhali-3 field the complaints with the EC today, the second day of kicking off the electioneering.

After submitting the allegation, Hafiz Uddin told the reporters that his leaders, activists and followers are being attacked with sharp weapons by the Awami League-led 14-party grand alliance activists.

“Even, I am being barred in visiting my own electoral area due to their threat,” Hafiz said claiming that the law and order situation deteriorated across the country ahead of the forthcoming national polls.

It was the EC’s responsibility to recover illegal firearms through carrying out drives before holding the election, but the constitutional body did not do so, he said.

Hafiz also a vice chairman of BNP said, “There is no security of the people’s lives and properties in his area as terrorists equipped with arms are loitering in and around the area while the members of law enforcement agencies are playing a silent role”.

The BNP leader said the government will be held responsible if the voters in his area cannot cast their votes on December 30.

Besides, Mahbub Uddin said, “The law enforcers including police along with the Awami League men have gone aggressive and started mass arrest in his electoral area so that no one can cast votes in favour of the Sheaf of Paddy.”

The EC has asked to stop the mass arrest but the police authority did not put heeds to the call, the BNP leader said.

“It seems to me that there is no control of the Election Commission on the police,” he said adding that he did not get any remedy even after informing the returning officer about the matter.

He said the top police officials from his constituency should be withdrawn for the interest of hold of the election in a fair and credible manner.

Responding to a query, Khokon said the commission has assured him to take necessary measures through discussion.
