BITID to halt virus testing for 3 days after staffers test Covid-19 positive

Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID) in Chattogram has announced that they will be suspending Covid-19 testing operations for three days from tomorrow after three staffers of its laboratory tested positive for coronavirus.

"The Covid-19 testing will be suspended for three days from tomorrow to disinfect the laboratory as three lab staff members tested positive for the virus," said Prof MA Hasan, director of BITID.

A total of 700 samples, collected between May 24 and May 26, have been sent to the National Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Referral Centre in Dhaka for Covid-19 test since the BITID lab will remain closed for three days, he added.

On May 26, Prof Dr Shakeel Ahmed, in-charge of BITID, tested positive for Covid-19 and went into isolation after discharging his duties till 11:00pm.

BITID became the first institution in Chattogram to run Covid-19 tests on March 25, under the leadership of Prof Shakeel.

All samples from at least six districts under Chattogram division were tested in the BITID laboratory before more testing facilities were introduced in the division.
