Air Fryer/what, how and why

We all love eating fried food at the expense of indigestion, high blood pressure and a fatty liver. But what if you could eat all the sinful stuff without the sin? Like the title has already clued you in, an Air Fryer is the magical device.

What is it?

It is an enclosed cylindrical fryer that uses hot air instead of oil. The machine has a metal pot where you put your soon-to-be-fried item in, an electric coil to heat up the air, and a powerful fan to circulate the air in and out of the pot. This cycling effectively replicates an environment similar to one found in a deep fryer with air and magic being used instead of oil.

What can you do with it?

In as little as 15 minutes, it will turn sliced raw potato into crispy fries without using a single spoon of soybean oil. Or it will roast your entire pack of chicken nuggets without you having to turn on the stove. The entire process is as simple as putting in the marinated items, setting the temperature and turning the timer knob. It takes up very little space compared to a deep fryer and is far easier to keep clean. Finally, the food it makes is cleaner and healthier than any of its deep fried counterparts and it does not leave you with used, burnt old oil. 


Depending on the brand, the fryer can cost as less as BDT 7,000/- (thank you, Walton) to as much as BDT 22,000/- (courtesy of Phillips) or more. So the entry price can be a little steep for some people, especially for those who want to buy it from a reputable brand. Using it will generate a spike in your electricity bill although being typically less than 1500 watts, these are more efficient than a standard oven.

What’s the catch?

If you love juicy food dripping with flavour (or oil), then the food made in an air fryer tends to be dryer than its deep fried counterpart.

Should you get one?

Yes, if you are a compulsive snacker with a knack for fried items. Terrific for whipping up quick snacks for a hangout with friends. On the other hand, if you are health conscious or just don’t like fried items, you are better off getting a cheap convection oven for your grilling and baking needs.
