Upcoming games of 2019: Worth getting excited for

2018 has been an exciting year for storytelling and graphical polish in gaming. And while we're raving about Red Dead Redemption 2 and waiting for Fallout 76, I think it's a good time for us to get excited for the games slated for release in 2019.

CyberPunk 2077

Platform: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Release Date: TBC 2019

Acclaimed developers CD Projekt Red's CyberPunk 2077 is being touted as the most hyped game of 2019. The open world first-person game has already caught people's attention with its Neo-Tokyo world design and deep customization features. The 48 minute gameplay demo caught everyone's attention and everyone is eagerly waiting for this futuristic shooter from the makers of The Witcher series. CD Projekt Red has yet to quote an exact date for the game's release but CyberPunk 2077 is expected to release sometime in 2019.

Days Gone

Platform: PlayStation 4

Release Date: April 26, 2019

While this Ps4 exclusive has gone through many ups and downs through development, fans of the Sony console have been waiting for Days Gone for a long time. The game's release has been pushed back through 2018 all the way into early 2019 only to get pushed back to April of 2019 again. The developers of the game, SIE Bend Studio's reasoning is that they don't want to release the game during the crowded February window which will also see the release of Anthem, Crackdown 3 and Metro Exodus. In the meantime, they will be adding final touches to the game's combat and some last minute polish to the overall design. A game which looks very similar to The Last of Us, Days Gone may have some surprises to add to the over bloated third person zombie game genre but it still remains to be seen.

Devil May Cry 5

Platform: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Release Date: March 8, 2019

The news of Devil May Cry 5 took the world by storm. Old school gamers and long time fans of the series rejoiced as the series looks to be returning to form following an awkward phase with the standalone Devil May Cry game. All the gameplay that we've seen so far looks to be bringing back the original hack n slash formula and the same camera angles. The worrying signs for me are the inclusion of micro transaction but the game looks smooth and Dante looks to be back in form. The game is slated for a Q1 2019 release.

Platform: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Release Date: February 22, 2019

While it's being considered as EA's answer to Bungie's Destiny, Anthem is looking like a more enriching experience than it is being given credit for. Similar to Destiny, however, it's a shared-world action RPG game, where you can team up with your friends and players online to fight giant sentient aliens. On the surface, there is nothing surprising about Anthem's third-person shooter mechanics, the game's development being in the good hands of Bioware means that there will be a focus on story alongside the indefinitely large game world.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Platform: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Release Date: March 22, 2019

From the makers of the Dark Souls series, From Software's new project Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a third person action adventure stealth game and it looks like it picked up from where the Souls series left off. We have had a chance to learn a lot about the game throughout 2017 and 2018 and it looks like it will be a revolution of the Nioh, Ninja Gaiden and Bloodborne formula. From Software is handling development while Activision is acting as publishers for the game which means that the game will be available on all platforms.

Gears of War 5

Platform: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One

Release Date: TBC 2019

There is little we know about Gears of War 5 and all we have to work with is a cinematic trailer that we got to see at E3 2018. While the graphics look similar to what we saw in Gears of War 4, the trailer suggests that there may be new gameplay elements added to the mix. The studio which looked after the epic Gears of War 4 title, The Coalition, will be once again looking into the development of this. Long time fans of Xbox and the series are eagerly waiting for more news but all we know thus far is that the game will release sometime in 2019.
