CCC election: voting postponed at 2 centres over violence, BNP backed councilor candidate detained

The Returning Officer of Chattogram City Corporation election Mohammad Hasanuzzaman postponed voting in two polling centres at ward no. 34 on allegations of occupying the centres, vandalising electronic voting machines and violence.

BNP backed councillor candidate Mohammad Ismail was detained he confirmed.

A clash broke out between the supporters of BNP backed councillor candidate Mohammad Ismail and those of AL backed councillor candidate Pulak Khastagir around 11:45am, said eyewitnesses, adding, both groups entered JM Sen School and College polling Centre at Pathorghata area in a bid to occupy the centre and started fighting.

An electronic voting machine was vandalised at that centre at the time.

On information, additional police force rushed to the spot and dispersed them around 12:30pm, adding around 35 people were injured in the clash.

Police detained Ismail in Pathorghata area, said Hasanuzzaman, adding, polling was postponed in two centres including JM Sen School and College.

Supporters of the BNP-backed councilor candidate besieged Kotwali Police Station, where he was taken, for around half an hour.

They demanded his immediate release, reported our correspondent quoting protesters.

Later, police dispersed them from the spot.
