Construction begins for 1st public maritime univ

The ground breaking ceremony of the permanent campus of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, country’s lone public university for maritime education, was held in Chattogram yesterday.

Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel inaugurated the ceremony with vice-chancellor (VC) of the university Rear Admiral M Khaled Iqbal in the chair at Radisson Blu Chattogram Bay View.

The permanent campus will be constructed on about 106 acres of land in Hamidchar area of Char Bakalia in the city.

In his speech, Nawfel hoped that the university will play a vital role in spreading higher education in the maritime sector, discover theories to explore marine resources, invent modern technology and create skilled manpower.

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, several lawmakers of Chattogram, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Dr Kazi Shahidullah were present among others.
