Chattogram Directorate of Environment (DoE) fined 71 brick kilns operating in three upazilas Tk 28,60,000 and demolished six chimneys for not complying with environment conservation law.
The fines were imposed after a hearing at DoE office at Khulshi in the port city yesterday.
Bodrul Huda, assistant director of Chattogram DoE, told The Daily Star that 21 brick kilns in Chandnaish upazila, 44 brick kilns in Raozan upazila and six in Sandwip upazila have been fined.
“They were fined as some of them were being operated without environmental clearance and some were using old technology that allows the chimneys to emit smoke violating the environment act,” he added.
Apart from the fines, six chimneys were demolished in Sandwip upazila, he further said.
