Modified technology can boost agriculture production: speakers

"Soil-less grass is free from pesticides and insects which ensures safe food for the cattle of my farm. The production of milk improved, when I started to use this modified technology," said Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, a farmer from Dhaka's Kalyanpur, at a seminar yesterday.

Mahbub cultivates soil-less grass for his 22 cows. He claimed the process is profitable than buying grass from the local market and said he learned this type of farming after getting training from Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR).

Institute of Technology Transfer and Innovation (ITTI) of BCSIR organised the seminar titled "Adoptive Research and Technology Transfer: Role and Vision of the Present Government 2041".

ITTI, that was formed recently under the Ministry of Science and Technology, claimed that a lot of farmers are benefitting from modified technology like Mahbub. ITTI Project Director Rezaul Karim presented four modified technologies including soil-less grass-vegetable farming (hydroponic production), that was improved by themselves.

Rezaul Karim said microalgae production is a good source of protein as well and Heat Pump Dryer, which provides most energy efficient method of drying product and ensure quality.

"Recirculating aqua culture system will ensure the increase of fish production," he added.

Prof Aftab Ali Sheikh, newly appointed chairman of BCSIR, said, "Bangladesh can be an example in the world by promoting the technology transfer [modification]." He further said, "And these moderated forms should reach the grass-root level entrepreneurs."

BCSIR member Md Shawkat Ali, Dhaka University teacher Md Saimum Hossain also spoke at the seminar.
