Toxic Paracetamol Syrup

Verdict on Polychem officials today

A Dhaka court will deliver its judgment today in a case filed against four officials of now-defunct Polychem Laboratories Limited for manufacturing toxic paracetamol syrup.

Judge Syed Kamal Hossain will deliver the judgment around 11:30am.

On January 24, both prosecution and defence completed arguments and the court recorded statements of three witnesses including the complainant in the case.

The accused are Abdur Rob, director of the company, ASM Golam Qader, its manager, and Mahbubul Alam and Delwar Hossain, pharmacists of the company. Of them, Qader is on the run, while three others are now on bail.

Meanwhile another accused, Harun-Or-Rashid, the company's managing director was dropped from the charge-sheet after his death.

The DG of Drug Administration filed cases against four pharmaceutical companies, including Polychem, in December 1992 and January 1993 after paracetamol syrup produced by them were found carrying industrial toxic diethylene glycol. The companies were accused of causing deaths of 92 children in 1992. They died from renal failure after taking paracetamol syrup for fever.
