Coronavirus: 33 villages in Lalmonirhat, Moulvibazar decide on voluntary lockdown

People of at least 33 villages in Lalmonirhat and Moulvibazar have opted for self-lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

No one can leave or enter the villages during this lockdown, our correspondents from Lalmonirhat and Moulvibazar reported quoting locals.

In Lalmonirhat, people of 20 villages under five upazilas also made a voluntary committee in each village to monitor the situation during the lockdown period.

The villagers placed bamboo barricades at all the entry points.

Pradip Kumar Roy, a resident of Paschim Barua village, said they took the measure after talking to all the villagers and taking the greater interests of their people into consideration.

Echoing Roy, Abdul Khaleque, a resident of Shatirpar village, said everyone is coming forward to help each other during this lockdown.

The villages which went for the self-imposed lockdowns are -- Mandirapara, Madanerachak, Shibram, Aambari, Folimari, Shothibari, Chapartal, Chaklarhat, Parshurampara, Tangvanga, Naodabash, Barokhata, Shafirhat, Kottali, Shirampur, Jhora and Sarkarerhat.

In Moulvibazar, people of 13 villages -- one under Sadar upazila and 12 under Kamalganj upazila -- imposed self-lockdown yesterday to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in their own areas.

Suman Dey, a villager, said that law enforcers are making them aware of the virus but some people were not following the instructions given. So, they took this initiative to stay safe during the crisis, he added.

The members of 100 houses at Purbo Girzapara in Sadar upazila organised the Purbo Girzapara Jubo Kalyan Sangstha to clean the area every day.

Locking down the 12 villages in Kamalganj upazila, the villagers hoisted red flags at four houses which are put under lockdown by the local administration, said Ashequl Haque, upazila nirbahi officer.

The family members of the four houses are not infected with the virus but some of them visited an area which was locked down recently, the UNO said.
