20 dept heads quit to protest attack

Chairmen of 20 departments of Jashore Science and Technology University (JSTU) on Saturday resigned from their administrative posts, protesting the attack on University Teachers Association President Prof Iqbal Kabir Zahid by some unruly men of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on January 9.

Finding the attackers unpunished at the 53rd Regent Board meeting on February 19, they decided to resign from their respective administrative post, Teachers Association General Secretary Nazmul Hassan said.

University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Anwar Hossain said he did not received the en masse resignation letter as according to the rules resignation has to be submitted individually.

Those who resigned from their posts are Prof Iqbal Kabir Zahid of microbiology department, Dr Mohammad Nazmul Hasan of management, Amzad Hossain of electrical and electronics engineering, Saibur Rahman Mollah of environmental science and technology, Sumon Chandra Mohant of chemistry, Mehdi Hassan of marketing, Abdullah Al Mamun of English, Kamal Hossain of accounting, Dr Wasikur Rahman of chemical engineering, Anisur Rahman of fisheries and marine bioscience, Dr ASM Mujahidul Haque of industrial and production engineering, Dr Biplob Kumar Biswas of biomedical engineering, Prof Mrityunjoy Biswas of agro product processing technology, Dr Syed Mohammad Ghalib of computer science and engineering, Saiful Islam of mathematics, Jafiful Islam of physical education and sports science, Dr Tanveer Hasan of textile engineering, Dr Omar Faruque of nutrition science, Jahangir Alam of finance and banking and Sheikh Mizanur Rahman of genetic engineering and bio-technology department.

On January 9, unruly BCL men attacked Prof Zahid and torn out anti-ragging posters when the latter protested ragging of some newcomers by the BCL activists at the university campus.
