Bangladeshi beaten dead by ‘BSF’

A Bangladesh national was beaten to death allegedly by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along Kathaldangi border in Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon today.

The deceased was identified as Md Kamal, 32, son of Abdul Hakim and a resident of Geruadangi village in the upazila, our Thakurgaon correspondent reports.

Quoting locals Md Amiruzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Haripur Police Station, said a group of five to six alleged cattle smugglers went near pillar No. 370 near the border to smuggle cattle into the country.

After seeing the alleged cattle traders, BSF members of Nargaon camp chased them and caught Kamal, the OC said adding that Kamal’s fellows managed to flee the scene.

They beat him up mercilessly and dumped him on the zero line in a critical state, he said.

Later, his fellows rescued him but he succumbed to his injuries, OC Amiruzzaman said quoting the locals.

On information, police recovered his body which bore several injury marks.

The body was sent to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) battalion-50 Commanding Officer Lt Colonel SNM Samiun Nabi Chowdhury said, they held a flag meeting with BSF members at the zero line of the border following the incident.  

But BSF refuted the allegation of beating any Bangladeshi youth, the BGB CO added.
