Bhangura's fake doctor arrested in Nilphamari

Police on Monday arrested the impostor who stole identity of a registered physician in Dhaka and masqueraded as a physician for seven years a private clinic in Pabna's Bhangura upazila.

Pabna police caught up with the fake doctor, Masud Rana, 48, and arrested him at his village home in Hatikhana of Sayedpur upazila in Nilphamari in the afternoon.

“Acting on a tip off, Pabna police with the help of Nilphamari police arrested the fake doctor from his village on Monday,” Said Rafikul Islam, superintendent of police (SP) in Pabna.

During primary interrogation, the accused confessed to have committed the crime and they are investigating to identify the others who were involved in the crime, the SP added.

On January 27, The Daily Star ran a report headlined “A fake doctor practising for seven years”.

Speaking with the journalists yesterday, the impostor, Masud Rana, claimed that after completing a paramedics course in Dhaka in the early 2000s, he started working at different private hospitals and diagnostic centres. He later came in contact with brokers who arranged doctors' certificates in exchange for money.

“When I come to learn that certificate of a doctor can be availed through payment, I contacted a broker, Saheb Ali of Solonga in Sirajganj,” he said.

“He supplied me the fake certificate for Tk 2,000. Then I came to Pabna and worked at different clinics temporarily and later started working permanently at Bhangura Health Care Limited, a private hospital,” added Masud Rana.

When asked to explain how he performed as a physician without any professional degree, he said the experience he gathered by working with real doctors in different areas made his job easier.

Masud Rana's crime came to light through a Facebook post that sparked widespread criticism.

After stealing the identity of Dr Masud Karim along with the doctor's real registration number acquired from Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), the fake doctor joined Bhangura Health Care Limited, in Sharatnagar Bazar in the upazila, as a resident medical officer in 2012.

The real Dr Masud Karim, from Feni, works at a private chamber in Dhaka's Khilgaon and was a student of the 1990-91 session at Mymensingh Medical College. Dr Masud Karim learned that another man was using his name and BMDC number in Pabna from the Facebook post of a fellow doctor.
