‘Drug peddler’ held in Dhaka

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members detained an alleged drug peddler along with 500 bottles of Phensidyl from Dhaka’s Dhamrai upazila last night.

The detainee was identified as Obaidul Islam Sheikh, 55, son of late Mofazzel Hossain of Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah, Additional Superintendent of Police Bina Rani Das, also staff officer of Rab-3, told The Daily Star.

Tipped off, a team of Rab-3 intercepted a truck coming from Jessore’s Benapole on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in front of Paal CNG Station in the upazila around 10:10pm yesterday.

Later, the elite force members recovered 450 bottles of Phensidyl, a mobile phone set and Tk 4,400 cash from the truck.

The Rab team also detained the truck driver Obaidul from the spot and seized the truck, the Rab official said.

However, Obaidul’s helper managed to flee the scene.
