An alleged drug peddler was killed in a "shootout" with members of Rab in Gazipur's Kashimpur area early today.
The deceased -- Nurul Haque, 25 – and a few others were carrying 1.7 lakh pieces of yaba from Cox's Bazar when the gunfight took place around 3:00am, said Md Kamruzzaman, assistant director of Rab-1.
The Rab official said they set up a checkpoint on the road at Ashulia on information that a large consignment of drugs is being smuggled in by a truck.
The Rab members signalled a truck to stop around 3:00am but its driver violated the signal and tried to speed up. As the Rab men chased them, the criminals opened fire at them, who retaliated.
Nurul was struck by bullets during the fire exchange, while four to five of his cohorts fled. He was rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Rab claimed to have recovered 1.7 lakh pieces of yaba, a firearm, and some bullets from the spot; and seized the truck. A Rab man was injured in the incident, they added.
