First police official crosses the Bangla Channel

13-year-old wins race across the 16.1km stretch of sea

Mishu Biswas, an additional superintendent of Bangladesh Police, swam across the Bangla Channel today and claimed to be the first police official to do so.

Meanwhile, Rabbi Rahman, a 13-year-old ninth-grader from Bogura, won the annual race across the 16.1 kilometre stretch of sea between the Teknaf Fisheries Jetty and the jetty in Saint Martin's Island.

Rabbi crossed the channel in three hours and 20 minutes.

Mishu Biswas and 43 other participants took part in the Fortune Bangla Channel Swimming event -- the 15th edition of the race held every year since 2006. Fortune Group are the title sponsors of the event organised jointly by Showroz Adventure and Extreme Bangla.

Mishu crossed the channel in six hours 20 minutes, starting from the Teknaf fisheries jetty at 9:25am and reaching Saint Martin's Island around 3:45pm today.

Besides, two women and a French national also conquered the channel.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Mishu Biswas said apart from serving the people as a member of Bangladesh Police, he loves to run and swim to get a better health.

"Conquering the Bangla Channel was a passion and now I'm preparing to attend the International Ironman Championship to be held in Malaysia in the upcoming year," he added.

Mishu Biswas joined the Bangladesh Police through 33rd Bangladesh Civil Service Exam and is currently posted as the additional deputy commissioner of Detective Branch (Ramna Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The Bangla Channel was discovered by "Adventure Guru" late Quazi Hamidul Haque and this year's event was dedicated to him.
