Jubo League leader shot dead in Cox’s Bazar

A local Jubo League leader has been shot dead by unidentified criminals in Hnila union in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

The deceased was identified as Omar Faruk, 30, president of ward 9 Jubo League unit of Hnila Union Parishad, our correspondent reports quoting Nurul Alam, president of Jubo League’s Teknaf upazila unit and also chairman of the upazila parishad.

A group of armed people led by two Rohingya men allegedly picked up Omar from in front of his house and shot him dead after taking him to a nearby hill around 10:30pm yesterday, said Amir Hamza, brother of the victim and an eye witness of the incident.

Amir told the reporters that Faruk might have been killed by his rivals as he wanted to be a member candidate of ward 9 in Hnila union in the upcoming election.

His rivals might hire the two Rohingya criminals to kill his brother Faruk, Amir Hamza said.

Police recovered the bullet-hit body around 12:30am, ABMS Doha, inspector (investigation) of Teknaf Police Station, told our Cox’s Bazar correspondent.

The body was sent to the district’s Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The process of filing a case was underway, the police official said adding that the law enforcers are trying to catch the culprits.

Protesting the murder, angry mob from the locality put a barricade on Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf road at Hnila Jadimura in the upazila for three hours from 10:00am, our correspondent said.

They also vandalised five houses including those of the suspected Rohingyas and several shops in the area.

On information, Teknaf upazila parishad chairman Nurul Alam, Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) M Robiul Hasan, Executive Magistrate Abul Mansur and Teknaf Officer-in-charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das visited the spot.
