A newly-married couple drowned in the Sati river in Sadar upazila of Lalmonirhat today.
They were identified as Anwarul Islam (22) and Sumiya Akhter Dristi (19) of Bahar Kasna area of Rangpur city, our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports quoting police.
Anwarul, along with his wife, recently came to visit his maternal uncle in Jogotber village under Rajpur union in Lalmonirhat, said his uncle Abdul Kader.
Kader said the couple went to bathe in the river near the village around 2:30pm and were washed away at one point by the strong river current. Neither knew how to swim very well, he added.
On information, a diver team of Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot and recovered the two bodies nearly one kilometre away from the scene around 3:30pm, added Kader.
Confirming the incident, Mahfuz Alam, officer-in-charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station, said the bodies were handed over to family members for burial.
