One killed in Meghna launch collision

A passenger was killed and five others were injured in a head-on collision between two launches in Meghna river in Munshiganj early today.

The deceased was identified as Humayun Ahmed, son of late Abdul Hai of Rammendipur of Shariatpur, our Narayanganj correspondent reports quoting police.

Mostafizur Rahman, inspector of Bandar Kalagasia Navy police camp, said the Chandpur-bound launch “Bogdadia-13” from Dhaka collided with “Manik-4”, which was heading for Dhaka from Sharitpur, at the estuary of Meghna and Dhaleshwari rivers around 2:00am.

The collision injured six passengers, including Humayun from Manik-4, the police official said.

They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared Humayun dead, he added.

The accident might have taken place as Manik-4 had no headlight and there was thick fog on the river, inspector Mostafizur added.
