People take risky ride as bridge incomplete in Khagrachhari

Three PC girder bridges are being constructed at Thakurchara, Joysen Para and Changrachari areas on Khagrachhari-Mahalchhari road, but although the work of Joysen Para and Changrachari bridges is progressing, work of Thakurchara Bridge was at the initial stage.

The people of Khagrachari are suffering a great deal as the bridges have not been built in time. The diversion roads built beside the bridges are in very bad shape and many accidents take place. A jeep overturned while crossing the diversion road beside Thakurchara Bridge on Tuesday, but there was no loss of life.

Joy Tripura, 45, a resident of Thakurachara area, said there have been many accidents on the diversion road.

According to Khagrachhari Road Division sources, construction firm Rana Builders is building the three PC girder bridges on Khagrachhari-Mahalchhari road. Construction of the bridges started in August 2017 and was scheduled to end in December 2018. The Road Division has extended the completion time by six months.

Sabuj Chakma, deputy divisional engineer of Khagrachhari Road Division, said the progress of the work of Thakurchara Bridge is very slow. They have sent letters to Rana Builders to complete the work soon, he added.

Owner of Rana Builders Md Zakir said construction of Thakurchara Bridge was delayed due to shortage of construction materials. The work will start very soon, he said.
