Police arrest restaurant owner’s brother for torturing 13-year-old employee

Police arrested the brother of a restaurant owner in connection with a case filed over torturing a 13-year-old employee in Kurigram's Rajibpur upazila last night.

The incident took place at 'Sayeem Hotel' in Machh Hati area around 10:30pm last night, our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports quoting police and locals.

The victim, Sagar Hossain, is from Joyanerchar Karkhana Para village under Dangdhara union in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur district, said police.

The victim's mother Mamota Begum filed a case against hotel owner Sayeem Hossain and his brother Shafi Alam with Rajibpur Police Station in this connection, police said.

Confirming the incident, Nabiul Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajibpur Police Station said Sagar was handed over to his family through the Department of Social Welfare after being rescued from the hotel.

They arrested the hotel owner's brother Shafi Alam from the spot but owner Sayeem Hossain remained absconding, said the OC.

According to witnesses and police, restaurant owner Sayeem Hossain was furious with Sagar because he did not join work at the restaurant on Wednesday due to illness, but the boy joined on Thursday afternoon and demanded his wages for the preceding seven days.

Sagar then had an altercation with restaurant owner Sayeem and his brother Shafi Alam as they refused to pay his wages.

At one stage, the hotel owner and his brother tied his hands and legs to a pole and tortured Sagar in the restaurant's kitchen.

Locals rushed to the spot after hearing Sagar's screams but they could not rescue him.

Being informed by locals, a team of Rajibpur Police Station rescued the boy from the kitchen and arrested the hotel owner's brother Shafi.

Mamota said she works as a maid in different houses due to poverty. Her son worked in the hotel for a daily wage of Tk 150.
