Relief distributed in starving Bandarban village after Star report

The local administration distributed government relief to the remote Kapru Para of Bandarban's Lama upazila this evening after The Daily Star ran a report on the matter titled "Acute food crisis hits village in Bandarban".

Nur-E- Jannat, upazila nirbahi officer of Lama upazila, said after seeing the report, they sent relief for the 49 families in the area.

"We sent each family 10 kg rice, 1 kg potato, 1 kg lentil and one soap after reading the news," said the UNO.

"It is really tough to reach the remote Paras but we are trying our best," she added.

Ing Chong Mro, karbari of Kapru Para, confirmed that they received the relief but claimed each family got around six kgs of rice, along with the other materials.

The karbari also thanked this newspaper and called upon the government and non-government organisations to provide more assistance during the lockdown.

When asked about the discrepancy in the amount of rice sent, the UNO denied the allegation and said, "I sent the relief with a union parishad chairman and a member of the area."

Sing Young Mro, a member of the Bandarban Hill District Council (BHDC), said, "It is really tough to reach people in remote areas, but we have already collected the lists of the needy families and are proving relief to them from today".
