Defying the ban on student politics at Bangladesh Engineering and Technology University (Buet), Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has announced convening a five-member committee of the university unit.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) President Fazlur Rahman Khokan and General Secretary Iqbal Hossain Shyamol, in a press release last night, approved the committee with Asif Hossain Rochi and Ali Ahmed as convener and member secretary respectively.
Following the formation of the committee, Buet authorities issued a press statement stating that punitive measures will be taken against those involved in anti-disciplinary activities.
"We have noticed that Chhatra Dal announced a Buet unit committee. As per the existing rules of the university, taking part in any political activities is a punishable offence. Action will be taken against those involved in such anti-disciplinary activities," reads the statement signed by the University Directorate of Students' Welfare Prof Mijanur Rahman.
Contacted, JCD General Secretary Iqbal Hossain told The Daily Star, "We have announced the committee and the process will continue in future."
Amid protests by Buet students following the killing of Abrar Fahad by some Chhatra League activists, the university authorities on October 11 last year banned political activities on the university campus.
Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department of Buet, died after he was brutally beaten allegedly by some Chhatra League men at a dormitory of the university between 7:00pm Sunday and 2:30am October 7, 2019.
