The Game of Thrones

Khan or Ahmed?

With better editing and well-written scripts Dhallywood has seen a packed competition between a number of films this Eid-ul-Fitr. The movie theatres across Bangladesh have tried to track down the real time figures of the number of people actually watching these films. Even though cineplexes have mushroomed in many cities, we still lack a reliable estimate of the popularity of these films.

Shakib -Bubly and Siam-Puja are battling it out in the box office this Eid with a slew of super hit movies.  Shakib gave us three new films this Eid which he promised would be new in terms of content and quality. His Chittagainga Poa Noakhailla Maiya, Super Hero and Panku Jamai have been released in 171 halls in total. On the other hand, Siam and Puja's Poramon 2 was released in 22 halls only. But surprisingly, this year Shakib's films have been fighting a tough competition with the new pair's Poramon 2. This film has been showered with love and appreciation from the viewers across the country.  The cinema halls are getting more audiences for Poramon 2 than Shakib's movies and this is a genuine threat for the king of Dhallywood.

The competition between Shakib's films and Poramon 2 is a battle fought between the producers as well.  Shakib's films have been man shows of the film industry till now but with the emergence of a movie like Poramon 2, a new wave of change is peeping through the corner and is evident from the hall owners' comments. Iftekhar Chowdhury Nawshad, the owner of Madhumita cinema hall said, “Super Hero is doing great in my hall. We earned more than four lacs in first six days of its release. The second week was in full swing as well. I distributed this film in different halls and got positive reviews from them. We started premiering Poramon 2 from yesterday. This film is bringing a good number of viewers to the hall.”

Abdul Aziz from Jaaz Multimedia shared a very interesting particular about Poarmon 2. He said, “Poramon 2 is going really well in the halls in and outside Dhaka. As a matter of fact, 80% of the viewers of this film were women of different ages. It's been a while we have had such a huge number of female viewers in the Cineplex. This film earned really well in its 2nd week. I premiered most of my movies in Balaka Cinema Hall but none of them earned as much as Poramon 2 did in the first week of its release. This film has a different group of audience which resulted in a high profit scale. We are assuming to earn twice the money (of what we are getting now) in its third week. ”

Ananda Cinema Hall in Farmgate is making its business with Shakib Khan's Super Hero. According to the hall authority, half of the hall is fully booked for every show. The crowd is less in the first and the last premiere but the matinee show is making most of the money. The FIFA World cup is another major threat to the success of these movies.

Poramon 2 has taken most of the shows of Star Cineplex and Balaka Cinema Hall. Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Sr. Manager of Star Cineplex told Star Showbiz that Poramon 2 is bringing a number of audiences everyday for two shows. The crowd is excellent and the business is satisfying. The same positive approach came from Shaheen, Manager of Balaka Cinema Hall. He said, “Poramon 2 is doing great in Balaka. We earned around 12 lacs in the first week of its release. Initially we were worried about the new pair but after watching the crowd, we are not anxious anymore. We have witnessed a rise in female audience after a long time.”

Assistant Manager of Blockbuster Cinemas of Jamuna Future Park, Md Ismail Hossein said, “Poramon 2 is at the top of our list. Other films are not doing bad either. In spite of being a new pair people are appreciating Siam and Puja's work. ”

We got mixed reviews from the movie theatres outside Dhaka. Ali Akbar, the Manager of the biggest Bangladeshi cinema hall Monihar in Jashore labeled Super Hero as a big hit. It earned more than 10 lacs within the first six days of its release. Md Nazrul from BGB Hall, Sylhet was concered about Super Hero's business. He said the film earned a moderate sum in the first two days of its release. The business dropped from the third day.

A different criticism of Shakib's work came from Mr Shahabuddin, the manager of Shapla Cinema Hall in Rangpur. He stated that, “After Nabab and Shikari, Shakib's performance has dropped drastically. His film Super Hero couldn't earn half of the money the earlier films had made.”

According to the estimate, Shakib Khan is having a major competition with Siam and Puja this year. We don't know about Shakib, but for Siam amd Puja, this review of hall owners will definitely leave a positive impact.
