Peeping Tom

It is now normal for fans to build up theories on any new movie that comes up with a long history of back-story or origin story. With the new trailer of ‘Joker’ firing up the internet, fans have gone overboard by trying to find hidden messages in the 2:42 minute clip. Till date, the Joker has been one of the most iconic and wicked comic book villains of all time.

His ruthless yet charismatic appearance over the decades in several DC’s Batman movies has left Joker fans in a hidden loop of what his identity was before he became the Clown Prince of Crime. With the highly anticipated Joker movie awaiting release this year, fans get a glimpse of what to look out for from both the teaser and the official trailer. The first thing we notice is that, it is not our traditional joker character.  So far, we see an aspiring comedian, Arthur Fleck, who loses his mental stability due to the society’s negligence and disregard. So it suggests that his character evolution to Joker was based on his paranoia. However, as per the comic books’ origin stories the missing link in this trailer seems to be the transformation from the bath in the chemical pool.

The trailer plays the clown evolution throughout. Even though the long-established Joker facepaint is not what the directors went for, the body language or the way he is dancing on the stairs in the video clip are credible personification of the character. Now, there is also another shot where we get more insights to how a comedian turned into a notorious clown. In the shot, if you take a close look at the notebook, you can see the Joker’s material pulls from his real life which indicates mental illness, insomnia, and poverty. The trailer also showcases connections and links to Batman and Bruce Wayne but does not entirely reveal how this distorted human turns into the most villainous character in DC comics’ tale. Till date, Heath Ledger has been the best actor to take on this sinister role and play it impeccably. Will Joaquin Phoenix bring a new perspective to the persona of the villain? Will he be as good as Heath Ledger? Fans are sure to watch the movie with these questions in mind. Joker, the origin story of Batman’s biggest foe, starring Joaquin Phoenix will be released on October 4, 2019.
