Runs provide fuel for return, says Imrul after double ton

Imrul Kayes hit an unbeaten double hundred for Khulna Division in the fourth day of the National Cricket League four-day match against Rangpur Division at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna today. The cricketer, who lost his place in the Bangladesh Test and T20 side said that the knock would provide fuel for him to return to the national team.

Continuing on from his overnight 31, Imrul lost partners at regular intervals but combined in important partnerships with No. 10 and No.11 batsmen Rubel Hossain and Al Amin Hossain, to complete his double ton as Khulna declared at 454 for nine.

He carved out a 84-run partnership for the ninth wicket partnership with Rubel, who played 44 deliveries for two runs and then a 10th wicket partnership with Al Amin of 42 runs.

Imrul hit 19 fours and six sixes during his 202 off 319 deliveries. He scored more than half of his runs while batting with tailenders and counterattacked brilliantly to keep Khulna innings alive.

“There is a lot of competition as the youngsters are doing well. To make a place in the side amongst them, one will always have to take on challenges. Give one’s best. It’s difficult to remain [in the squad] without scoring big runs and I was finally able to do that,” Imrul told The Daily Star after his double ton.

The match eventually ended in a draw as Rangpur batted for nine overs, losing one wicket before stumps.

Imrul has been out of the national team and experienced the trauma of his son falling sick and requiring treatment outside the country. Scoring a double hundred gave Imrul the necessary impetus to return to form.

“If I get the opportunity [to return to the national outfit] then it can be surmised whether the runs will be important. But scoring runs is always good for confidence. It gives one the fuel to make a return,” the left-hander concluded.
