UP member shot dead in Rangamati

A union parishad member was gunned down by unknown miscreants in Jurachhari upazila of Rangamati last night.

The deceased -- Hemanto Chakma (32) -- was a member of Bonjogichhara Union Parishad and a resident of Dhamaipara village in the upazila, reports our Rangamati correspondent.

Quoting locals, Mahmudul Hai, officer-in-charge of Jurachhari Police Station, said a group of miscreants stormed into a house where Hemanto was staying around 11:30pm and opened fire at him, leaving him dead on the spot.

On information, police recovered the body that bore eight bullet marks from the spot, the OC said.

None was arrested in this connection so far, the OC said, adding the reason behind the murder could not be known immediately.
