Modi holds talk with Trump over phone

Stresses creating terror-free environment

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Monday night and told him that “extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region was not conducive to peace.”

During the 30-minute-long conversation, Modi highlighted the importance of creating an environment free from terror and violence and eschewing cross-border terrorism without exception, our New Delhi correspondent reports quoting a statement issued by the Indian Prime Minister’s Office.

“Their 30-minute conversation covered bilateral and regional matters and was marked by the warmth and cordiality which characterises the relations between the two leaders,” it said.

“In the context of the regional situation, the Prime Minister stated that extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region was not conducive to peace,” the statement read.

“He (Modi) highlighted the importance of creating an environment free from terror and violence and eschewing cross-border terrorism without exception,” it also read.

The Indian premier reiterated India’s commitment to cooperate with anyone who followed this path, in fighting poverty, illiteracy and disease, the statement added.
