When contacted, Ruhul Amin, upazila nirbahi officer of Hathazari and member secretary of the management committee, said there is no alternative but to close the zoo for visitors for two weeks against the backdrop of a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases.

"As several thousand visitors come to the zoo every day, it would pose risks and further worsen the pandemic situation," he said.

"Around 75,000 people visited the zoo in March," he said.
