PM shocked at loss of lives, property in Chennai flood

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed profound shock at the loss of lives and damage of property in southern India due to the terrible flood.

In a message sent to her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, Hasina said, “I am profoundly shock to have learnt about the terrible flood that hit the southern state of India and the loss of lives caused by it."

She also said, "At this time of distress, I, on behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh and on my own behalf, would like to convey to you and the people of the affected areas and the members of the bereaved families our heartfelt sympathies and deepest condolences. "

Sheikh Hasina also prayed for salvation and the eternal peace to the departed souls. "As a close friend and neighbour, we stand firmly by you at this difficult hour," she added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew to Chennai of the Tamil Nadu state on Thursday to see the damages caused by the widespread flooding which has left more than 260 people dead since last month.

A large-scale rescue operation is underway, amid neck-high water in some areas there.
