50 people reach Kurigram town by boats; besiege DC office demanding measures against river erosion

People affected by erosion in Roumari and Char Rajibpur upazilas of Kurigram besieged the deputy commissioner's office today demanding implementation of the four-point measure to prevent river erosion.

Around 50 people from Roumari and Char Rajibpur upazilas, which are isolated by the Brahmaputra river, went to the district town by boat and brought out a procession this afternoon to press home their demand.

Later, they besieged the Deputy Commissioner's office, held a rally there and placed a memorandum to the DC demanding implementation of the four-point measure to prevent river erosion.

The demand includes the construction of sustainable dams on the east bank of the Brahmaputra, compensation and rehabilitation of those affected by river erosion, and stopping unplanned sand extraction and modern transportation of water vehicles from Roumari Rajibpur to Kurigram district headquarters.

Addressing the rally, speakers threatened to go for tougher programmes if their demands are not met.

They also announced to bring out processions and hold rallies in 30 areas of the two upazilas in March, hold a convention in April and bring out a long march in May demanding prevention of the river erosion.
