Tissue bank helped 8,300 organ transplantations in 12 years
A total of 8,300 people have had organ transplantations in 12 years, benefited by the lone tissue bank in the country.
The information was disclosed when Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved a Tk 174 crore project today for upgrade and extension of the bank.
At a briefing after the ECNEC meeting, Nasima Begum, a member of Planning Commission, said two lakh people who were injured in fire incidents or accidents went through organ transplantations with the help of this bank since its establishment, in 2009, till 2020.
Besides, 347 skulls were replaced with the facilities during the period, she said.
Nasima said that amputated and severed body parts, collected from hospitals, are stored in the bank in minus 80-degree Celsius temperature after sterilisation. The organs can be stored for five years, she said.
Human body parts are allocated based on the doctors' recommendations and globally-approved guidelines are followed when setting medical charges, Nasima said.
The project has been undertaken as its demand is increasing day by day.
The project will be implemented till December 2024, the proposal says.
