Bihar Chief Minister recommends CBI probe into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death

Bihar state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today decided to hand to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) the probe into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Kumar said he ordered the CBI investigation into the death of the 34-year-old actor, who hails from Bihar, after his father KK Singh requested for it during a phone conversation, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

Sushant Singh Rajput, who was considered an emerging star of Bollywood, was found dead in his apartment in Mumbai on June 14.

The probe into Sushant's death has seen a war of words between the police in Patna, the capital city of Bihar, and the police in Mumbai which hosts Bollywood and is the capital city of Maharashtra.

The CBI is under the administrative control of the federal Indian government. Nitish Kumar heads a coalition government in Bihar that also has Bharatiya Janata Party as a key partner of Kumar-led Janata Dal (United).

The Mumbai police claimed it was a case of suicide and has been inquiring into allegations that the actor was suffering from depression and had felt marginalised in the intense competition in Bollywood.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had earlier ruled out a CBI inquiry alongside the ongoing Mumbai police probe into the actor's death on June 14.

KK Singh demanded a CBI probe a day after he accused the Mumbai Police of not reacting when he had talked about a threat to his son's life months ago.

In a video shared by news agency ANI yesterday, KK Singh said: "On February 25, I informed Bandra Police, the life of my son was in danger. He died on June 14 and I asked them to act against people in my complaint. No action was taken even 40 days later."

Sushant's friend Rhea Chakraborty has challenged in the Supreme Court the Bihar police's role in the investigations and asking for the transfer of the FIR filed by the actor's family in Patna, capital city of Bihar, to Mumbai.

Patna police launched a separate probe after the actor's family filed a complaint against Rhea accusing her of transferring money from his account and mentally harassing him. The complaint alleged that Rs 15 crore was missing from Sushant Singh's account. The Mumbai police says it has found no evidence of any financial wrongdoing by Rhea.

The war of attrition between the Patna and Mumbai police escalated when a Bihar officer who reached Mumbai for probe on Sunday was forced to coronavirus quarantine.
