Bangladesh women suffer big defeat

Bangladesh women team suffered an embarrassing 64-run defeat against India in the opening match of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup at the Asian Institute of Technology ground in Bangkok today.

Chasing India’s not so impressive total of 118-6, the Bangladesh team, with a new set of coaching staff, were bundled out for 56 in 18.2 overs. Shaila Sharmin top-scored with 18 while an experienced Salma Khatun, who scored 17, was the other double-digit scorer in the Bangladesh chase. Indian off-spinner Anuja Patil took two wickets for 7 runs in her three miserly overs, leg-spinner Poonam Yadav claimed three wickets giving away only 13 runs in her quota of four overs.

Earlier, set into bat India’s total was built around a 70-run opening stand between Mithali Raj (49 not out) and Smriti Mandhana (41). Bangladesh’s leg-break bowler Khadijatul Kubra took two wickets for 14 runs.

Bangladesh will play their next game against hosts Thailand on Monday.
